Caring for carers – new wellbeing course

Unpaid carers are being invited to take part in a new wellbeing course run by local counsellors in Skipton.

Carers’ Resource, the local charity that supports unpaid carers across Craven, is launching a two-part workshop “Caring for the carers – You Count!”

The sessions have been designed specifically for carers by local counsellors/therapy practitioners Deborah Hooker (deborahjcounselling) and Corinne Yeadon (Being Better), who have both previously delivered workshops for Carers’ Resource.

Debi Hawkins, Locality Worker for Carers’ Resource said: “These workshops are dedicated to carers which aims to give people time and space to recognise that they count too. It always helps to know that you are not alone, and the workshops will offer people an opportunity to meet with others in a similar situation.

“Some people may have “drifted” into the role of carer, or may have been suddenly thrust into the role due to an unexpected event or illness. It’s often the case that their own life gets put on the ‘back burner’ while they spend their time focused on the wellbeing of someone else.

“We are really pleased to be working with Debs and Corinne again, and are very grateful to Skipton and Craven Rotary for the funding to be able to deliver these sessions.”

Corinne said: “The aim is, that you will take this time to step back and start to consider your own wellbeing and how important it is that you value yourself.

“Remember! If you don’t take care of your own needs, you can’t take care of anyone else.”

The exercises and activities have been designed to support carers and help them to “regain” their identity. The first session will look at:

  • Your values and how they can change.
  • Emotions and behaviour which may conflict with your values, such as anger and frustration.
  • Communication and Assertiveness, having your say without saying “sorry”

The second session will build on the first session, highlighting values, strengths, achievements and celebrations.

The first course is running on Wednesday 8th May and Wednesday 12th June from 9.45am to 12 noon.

There will be a second opportunity to take the course, on Wednesday 18th September and Wednesday 16th October, again from 9.45am to 12 noon.

All course materials will be provided along with brews and biscuits, and all sessions will be delivered at Carers’ Resource, Ronaldsway House, 36 Brook Street, Skipton BD23 1PP.
